For a dining area in a loft space with exposed brick and a concrete ceiling we built a table on a central metal base. It is an industrial dining table in which the lead part is played by the base rather than the top. The chairs, lighting and room finishes were not part of our scope.
The top rests on a single base in the middle. Nothing gets in the way under the table: legs do not meet corner posts, and chairs can go along the long sides as well as at the ends. The tabletop overhangs a long way, so the base stands on a wide flat plate lying on the floor. The plate spreads the load and stops the table rocking when someone leans on the edge. In effect it is a table with X-shaped steel legs, except that both arms meet on a shared footing. Another dining table is shown in our solid wood furniture showroom.
Two opposing angled elements rise from the plate. The first is a wide flat post. The second is a row of parallel round tubes leaning the other way and passing through the plane of the post. From the side the base reads as a letter X, at an angle you see separate “strings”, so the outline changes as you walk round the table. The whole base is finished in one matt black.
The dark matt top and black base do not compete with the textured wall but pull the room together around them: a typical device that we describe in our guide to industrial and loft style. The loft character here rests on three materials, brick, concrete and metal, and the furniture adds a precise graphic line. Another large metal piece set against a brick wall is our counter with a riveted metal front in a bar with an oval island. A long solid wood top on two supports is the loft table on angular metal legs.
A table like this suits an office dining area, a meeting room or a venue that needs one strong piece. Other projects for companies are on our custom furniture for business page.
