A compact white hallway unit made to measure: a bench, coat hooks, a mirror and top boxes by the front door, with a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe next to it. This small hallway storage unit holds everything that is usually split between a wardrobe, a shoe cabinet and a coat rack.
Between the wall and the wardrobe we fitted several elements. A narrow tall cabinet with a mirror over the whole door hides the electrical panel: the wall by the entrance looks clean, and access stays easy, you just open the door. Below the panel there are shelves, and under them a wall-hung drawer for keys and gloves. The bench with a grey velvet-like cushion sits on a box with a drop-down front: behind it are two shoe compartments, so nothing is left on the floor. Above the bench is a white grooved panel with six double hooks for everyday coats.
The top-box fronts lift on gas struts. In a narrow passage this works better than side-hung doors: an open front does not block the corridor and is not at head height. Boxes, suitcases and seasonal things go up there. How closed storage removes the feeling of clutter is covered in our article on visual noise at home.
Next to it stands a tall white wardrobe with hinged doors and the same kind of top box. Inside there is a section for long clothes with a pull-out front-facing rail, a column of shelves and two internal drawers. On a front-facing rail the hangers face you and slide out, so the clothes are visible at once. A different kind of open coat rack is shown in the hallway with a coat rack on oak-look slats, and a bench in a niche beside a wardrobe in the beige hallway with long black handles. If there is a niche by the entrance, it can be closed with sliding doors — as in the sliding wardrobe with a storage closet inside.
This solution suits a flat with a small hallway where the electrical panel by the door has to be hidden without losing room for shoes. More examples are in the custom furniture for the home section.
