A curved kitchen island: a sage green body with vertical fluting and a dark worktop with a marble pattern, softly rounded at the end. We made it for an exhibition display, where it stands together with units in a dark walnut finish.
The end of the island is fully rounded: the body follows an arc, so there is no sharp edge in the passage and the island is easy to walk around. The worktop repeats the line of the body and projects slightly over the front. The fluted front runs along the curve without breaks, so the bend can be read from any side. A dark recessed plinth visually lifts the body off the floor, and the massive island looks lighter. The same device in a lived-in flat is the kitchen with a rounded peninsula.
On the working side a horizontal dark groove runs through the front. It is both the handle and the line between the fronts: there is storage behind the fluting, and the pattern of the ribs continues across the joint without a break. Surface-mounted handles are not needed here. The island carries a hob, with a ceiling-hung extractor above it.
The island is the only coloured piece in the display. Around it are units in a dark walnut finish, glass display cabinets with lit shelves and gold-tone profiles instead of handles; the worktop and the wall above it share one dark marble pattern. A single accent piece brings colour without turning the whole kitchen into a coloured one. Another dark kitchen with an island is the black kitchen with an island and a bar section. A circle as a piece in its own right is the shelf of two metal rings with solid wood shelves.
A radius front cannot simply be cut out of a sheet: we make bent parts to order for a specific radius. The gallery includes a photo from production that shows what a curved front on hinges and a rounded plinth look like before installation on site. More on the technique is in our article on how furniture with rounded corners is designed and made.
A curved island suits a kitchen and living room where the island stands in the passage and is seen from all sides. Other kitchens and home furniture are on the custom furniture for the home page.
